Step 1: turn each grade into points
On the usual 4.0 scale, A is 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7 and F 0. Many schools also count A+ as 4.0; some give it 4.3, so check your school's scale.
Step 2: weight by credit hours
Multiply each course's points by its credit hours, add those up, and divide by the total credit hours.
| A, 3 credits | 4.0 × 3 = 12.0 |
| B+, 4 credits | 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 |
| A−, 3 credits | 3.7 × 3 = 11.1 |
| B, 3 credits | 3.0 × 3 = 9.0 |
That is 45.3 points over 13 credits, a semester GPA of 3.48.
Step 3: combine with your earlier GPA
For a cumulative GPA, turn the old GPA back into points: a 3.2 over 30 credits is 96 points. Add the new 45.3 points and divide by all 43 credits: 3.29.
The GPA Calculator does both steps: enter your courses, then your previous GPA and credits.
Weighted GPA
Some high schools add extra points for honors, AP or IB classes, so a weighted GPA can go above 4.0. How much they add varies by school, so use your school's own rules for a weighted GPA; the calculator gives the standard unweighted one.
