Why you have a WebP file
Most large websites now serve images as WebP, a Google format that is smaller than JPG at the same quality. When you save an image from a page, you get that WebP file. Browsers show it fine, but some older photo editors, printing services and upload forms reject it.
Convert in your browser
- Open WebP to JPG, or WebP to PNG if the image has a transparent background.
- Drop in the files. Each is converted straight away.
- Download them one by one or as a ZIP.
JPG or PNG?
Choose JPG for photos. Choose PNG for logos, icons and anything with transparency: JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas turn white.
On a Mac
Recent versions of macOS open WebP in Preview. Choose File → Export and set Format to JPEG or PNG.
Avoid the problem next time
Taking a screenshot of an image gives you a PNG instead, though at screen resolution rather than the original size.
