How to Make a Photo Collage

Pick the size first

Decide where the collage will go, because that sets its shape:

  • Instagram post: square 1080 × 1080, or portrait 1080 × 1350, which takes up more of the feed.
  • Story or status: 1080 × 1920.
  • Screen or presentation: landscape 1920 × 1080.
  • Print: 8 × 10 inches at 300 DPI is 2400 × 3000 pixels.

Choose a layout

  • Grid: works for 4, 6 or 9 photos of similar importance.
  • Side by side: best for two or three photos, such as before-and-after shots.
  • Stacked: photos one above the other, good for tall stories.

Photos are cropped to fill their cell, so put the subject near the middle of each one, or crop them first with Crop Image.

Spacing, corners and background

A thin gap of 8 to 16 pixels in white or a color from the photos keeps the images apart without drawing attention. Rounded corners suit social posts; square corners and no gap look cleaner for prints. Use the same orientation for most photos so they crop evenly.

Make it

Add 2 to 12 photos to the Collage Maker, choose the layout, size, spacing, corners and background, and download. It runs in your browser, so the photos are not uploaded, and there is no watermark. If a site has a file size limit, shrink the result with Compress Image.
