Pattern Find

How to find a motif in DNA or a protein

  1. Choose DNA or protein under Sequence type, then paste the sequence, as plain text or FASTA.
  2. Type the pattern. In DNA, IUPAC codes such as W or N match any of their bases; in a protein, X matches any residue.
  3. Every match is listed with its start and end, and for DNA its strand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a regular expression?

Yes. A pattern with characters such as [ ] ( ) * + or ? is used as a regular expression, for example GC[AT]{2,4}GC.

What does N[^P][ST][^P] find?

The N-glycosylation motif: asparagine, then any residue except proline, then serine or threonine, then any residue except proline.

Is my sequence uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your sequences never leave your device.
