How to convert cups to grams

  1. Type the amount, as a decimal or a fraction such as 1 1/2 or 3/4.
  2. Choose the ingredient. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh different amounts, so the ingredient sets the conversion.
  3. Read the weight in grams. The table under it gives the same amount in ounces, pounds, spoons and metric or Japanese cups; choose Grams in From to go the other way.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup?

It depends on the ingredient, because a cup measures volume. A US cup of water weighs about 237 g, a cup of all-purpose flour about 120 g, a cup of granulated sugar about 198 g and a cup of butter 227 g.

Which cup does it use?

The US cup of 236.6 ml, used in most American recipes. Choose Metric cups for the 250 ml cup of Australian, New Zealand and Canadian recipes, or Japanese cups for 200 ml.

Where do the weights come from?

Dry ingredients follow the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart, measured by spooning the ingredient into the cup and leveling it. Liquids, honey, syrup, peanut butter, sour cream and yogurt are worked out from their density. Scooping flour straight from the bag can add 20% or more, so weigh it when a recipe has to be exact.

How do I convert grams to cups?

Choose Grams in From and Cups (US) in To, or press the swap button. Divide the grams by the weight of one cup: 300 g of flour is 300 ÷ 120 = 2 1/2 cups.
