Frequently asked questions

How do I post a split image on Instagram?

Tick "Crop to squares first" and use 1 row by 3 columns for a panorama, or 3 by 3 for a grid. Upload the pieces to a carousel in order, left to right, so swiping moves across the picture.

What are the files called?

Each piece is numbered row-column, so -1-2 is the first row, second column. Sorted by name they come out in reading order.

Why crop to squares first?

A wide photo cut into a 3 × 3 grid gives nine letterbox strips. Cropping to a centred square first gives nine square tiles, which is what a grid post needs.

Does it lose quality?

The pieces are cut at the original resolution, so there is no resizing. Saving as PNG keeps every pixel exactly; JPG at 92% is visually the same and much smaller.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored on a server.
