Frequently asked questions
How are the colours chosen?
By median cut: all the pixels are treated as one box of colours, which is split along its widest channel again and again until there are as many boxes as colours you asked for. Each box then gives its average. It is the same idea used to reduce an image to a palette, and it finds the colours that cover the picture rather than the brightest few pixels.
What does the percentage mean?
The share of the pixels that fell into that colour group, so it tells you which colours dominate the picture and which are accents.
Why are the colours muddier than the photo?
Each swatch is the average of a group, so a photo with a lot of variation gives softer colours. Ask for more colours to split the groups further and get purer ones.
Can I get the colour of one spot instead?
Yes, use the Image Colour Picker, which reads the exact pixel you click.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Everything happens inside your browser, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored on a server.
