Frequently asked questions
What does Automatic do?
It measures the loudness of the whole file and lifts it to about -16 LUFS, the level podcasts and streaming services aim for. That suits a quiet voice recording better than a fixed boost, because it works out the amount for you.
How much is a decibel?
+6 dB doubles the signal, which sounds roughly twice as loud, and +20 dB is ten times the signal. Small amounts go further than people expect, so try +6 dB first.
Why is my audio distorted?
Boosting a loud recording pushes the peaks past what the format can store and they get squared off, which sounds like crackle. Leave the limiter ticked, use less gain, or use Automatic.
Can it rescue a recording that is almost silent?
Up to a point. Lifting a very quiet recording lifts the hiss with it, because the gain cannot tell them apart. It will be audible, but the noise will be audible too.
Do I get audio even from a video?
Yes. The audio track is taken out of a video and saved as a 192 kbps MP3.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The first use downloads the converter (about 30 MB); your file never leaves your device.
