Frequently asked questions

Does the picture lose quality?

No. The video track is copied across untouched and only the audio track is left out, so the picture is bit for bit the original. It is also fast, because nothing is re-encoded.

Can I get the audio back later?

Not from the muted file; the sound is gone from it. Keep the original if you may need the audio again.

Why mute a video at all?

To take out background noise, music that would be flagged by a copyright check, or a conversation that happened to be recorded, before posting or sending the clip.

Which formats work?

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV and WebM keep their own container. Anything else is saved as MP4.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The first use downloads the converter (about 30 MB); your file never leaves your device.
