How to calculate audio bitrate and file size

  1. Choose uncompressed audio and set the sample rate, bit depth and channels, or choose compressed audio and enter its bitrate.
  2. Enter the length of the recording in minutes and seconds.
  3. The file size appears with the bitrate and the size per minute.

Frequently asked questions

What is the bitrate of a CD?

44,100 samples a second × 16 bits × 2 channels = 1,411.2 kbps, about 10.6 MB per minute.

Why MB and MiB?

MB here is a million bytes, as used by most file managers on Mac and phones and by storage makers; MiB is 1,048,576 bytes, as shown by Windows.

Is a compressed file exactly this size?

Close to it. Constant-bitrate files match the calculation apart from a few kilobytes of tags and artwork; variable-bitrate files vary with the music.
