How to test your keyboard
- Press each key. It turns dark while held down and stays highlighted once it has worked.
- Keys that never light up are not registering. Keys that stay dark after you let go may be sticking.
- Hold several keys together to see how many your keyboard registers at once, shown under Most at once.
Frequently asked questions
Some keys do not light up. Is my keyboard broken?
Not necessarily. Media keys, Fn and some laptop keys are handled by the keyboard or the operating system and never reach the browser. Letter, number and arrow keys that do not light up are a sign of a real fault.
What does "Most at once" tell me?
It shows how many keys were registered at the same time. Many office keyboards stop at 2 to 6 keys in some combinations, known as ghosting; gaming keyboards often register every key.
What are key, code and keyCode?
key is the character or name the key produces with your layout, code is the physical key position, and keyCode is the older numeric code that some programs still use.
Does it work with non-US layouts?
Yes. The on-screen keyboard shows a US layout, but each key lights up by its position, so the key in the same place lights up on any layout.
Is what I type recorded?
No. Key presses are only shown on this page and are never stored or sent.
