How to plot codon usage along a gene
- Paste a coding DNA sequence, in frame.
- Optionally paste a codon usage table for the host organism. Without one, the gene itself is used.
- Each bar shows how common that codon is among its synonymous codons. Codons below the fraction you set are marked as rare.
Frequently asked questions
Why look for rare codons?
Runs of codons that are rare in the host can slow translation or cause errors when a gene is expressed in another organism, such as a human gene in E. coli.
