MOI Calculator

How to calculate virus volume for an MOI

  1. Type the number of cells and the virus titer in infectious units, such as PFU or TU, per mL.
  2. Type the MOI you want to get the volume of virus, or choose MOI from volume and type a volume.
  3. The result appears with the infectious units used and the expected share of cells infected.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula?

Volume of virus (mL) = MOI × number of cells ÷ titer (infectious units per mL).

How are the infected shares worked out?

With the Poisson distribution: the share of cells infected at least once is 1 − e^-MOI, so an MOI of 1 infects about 63% of cells and an MOI of 3 about 95%.
