How to play hangman
- Pick a category, or leave it on Anything.
- Click or type a letter. Right letters fill in the blanks; wrong ones cost a life and add to the drawing.
- Guess the whole word before the drawing is finished.
Frequently asked questions
How many wrong guesses do I get?
Six by default, which is the classic number. Set it to eight for an easier game or four for a hard one.
Are the words real?
Yes. Every word is a common English word checked against a dictionary, and each category only holds words that fit it.
Which letters should I start with?
Vowels tell you the shape of the word, and E, A, R, I, O, T, N and S are the most common letters in English. Starting with E, A and R costs little and usually reveals something.
Does the category help?
Yes, that is the point of it. Knowing the answer is an animal or something to eat cuts the possibilities down a long way, and the length is shown as well.
Can two people play?
Not against each other here; the computer picks the word. For the two-player version one person thinks of a word and draws the blanks on paper.
