How to play FreeCell

  1. Click a card to move it. It goes to a foundation if it can, then onto a column where it fits, then into a free cell.
  2. Build the columns down in alternating colours, and the four foundations up from the ace in each suit.
  3. Click an empty column or free cell to move the last movable card there on purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Can every FreeCell game be won?

Almost. Of the 32,000 numbered deals in the Microsoft version, all but one are winnable, and that one is game 11,982. Random deals are winnable about 99.99% of the time, so if you are stuck it is nearly always the moves, not the deal.

What are the free cells for?

Parking. Each holds one card, which is how you dig out a card buried under others. The fewer cells you leave full, the more you can move at once.

How many cards can I move at once?

One for the card itself, doubled for every empty column, multiplied by one more than the number of free cells. With two free cells and one empty column you can shift six. The tool works this out and refuses a move that is too big.

Why did a card fly to the foundation on its own?

Because nothing left in the tableau could still need it. Cards are only sent up automatically when no lower card of the opposite colour is still waiting for them.

What is the first thing to do in a deal?

Find the aces and twos and work out what is on top of them. Then plan the whole dig before you move anything, because a card parked in a cell with nowhere to go is how most games are lost.

Where is my best time saved?

In this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere, and clearing your browser data clears it.
