How to test your typing speed

1. Click the box under the passage and start typing. The timer starts with your first key.
2. Letters turn green when they are right and red when they are wrong. Fix mistakes with Backspace or carry on.
3. When you type the last character, the test stops and shows your words per minute, characters per minute and accuracy. New text gives you another passage.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM worked out?

A word counts as five characters, the usual standard. Only correctly typed characters count, so WPM is correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is typical for adults who type regularly, 60 WPM is fast, and 80 WPM or more is very fast. Accuracy matters more: 95% or better is the aim.

How do I get faster?

Keep your eyes on the screen rather than the keys, use all ten fingers from the home row (ASDF and JKL;), and practise a few minutes every day. Speed follows accuracy.
