kW to Amps Calculator

How to convert kW to amps

  1. Choose whether to calculate the current or the power.
  2. Choose DC, single-phase or three-phase and enter the voltage.
  3. Enter the power or current, and the power factor for AC; the result appears with the apparent power in kVA.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula?

DC: I = P ÷ V. Single-phase AC: I = P ÷ (V × power factor). Three-phase AC: I = P ÷ (√3 × V × power factor), where P is in watts.

What power factor should I use?

Resistive loads such as heaters are 1. Motors are typically 0.8 to 0.9, and modern power supplies with correction around 0.95 to 0.99. The equipment label usually gives it.

What is the difference between kW and kVA?

kW is the real power that does work; kVA is the apparent power the supply has to carry. They are equal only when the power factor is 1, and cables and breakers are sized from the current, so use kVA.
