Which end do I start from?
The end with the bands closer together. The tolerance band, often gold or silver, is usually set apart at the other end.
How are 4 and 5 band resistors different?
A 4 band resistor has two digits, a multiplier and a tolerance; a 5 band one has three digits for more precision. A 6th band gives the temperature coefficient.
