Gravel Calculator

How to calculate how much gravel you need

  1. Choose a rectangle or a circle and enter its size.
  2. Enter the depth of the layer you want.
  3. Choose the material or enter its density; the volume, weight and number of bags appear.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula?

Volume = area × depth, and weight = volume × density. 5 × 3 m at 5 cm deep is 0.75 m³, which at 1,600 kg/m³ is 1.2 tonnes.

How deep should gravel be?

About 5 cm (2 in) for a decorative layer, and 10 cm (4 in) or more for a path or driveway over a compacted sub-base. Mulch is usually 5 to 7 cm.

Do densities vary?

Yes. The figures here are typical for dry material; wet gravel, sand and soil are heavier, and suppliers quote their own densities.

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded.
