Frequently asked questions
What are the symbols?
I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1000.
How does the subtraction work?
A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted, so IV is 4 and XC is 90. Only I, X and C are used that way, and only before the next two larger symbols.
Why does it stop at 3999?
MMMCMXCIX is the largest number the seven standard symbols can write. Larger numbers need an overline, which multiplies a symbol by 1000, and that is not part of the usual notation.
How do I write a year?
2026 is MMXXVI. Dates are usually written as one number, so 15 March 2026 becomes XV.III.MMXXVI.
Is there a zero?
No. Roman numerals have no symbol for zero and no way to write a negative number or a fraction of one.
