Frequently asked questions

How does text become binary?

Each character becomes its UTF-8 byte value written in base 2, padded to 8 digits. "A" is 65, which is 01000001.

What about accents and emoji?

They take more than one byte in UTF-8, so "é" is two bytes and an emoji is four. Converting back puts them together again.

Why does my binary not convert back?

Every group has to be a number from 0 to 255. Stray letters, groups of the wrong length, or values above 255 cannot be a byte, and the tool says which group is at fault.

Does it need separators?

No. Binary and hexadecimal with no separators are split by length, 8 digits and 2 digits. Decimal and octal need separators, because 123 could be one byte or three.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The text is processed inside your browser and is never sent anywhere.
