How to make a URL slug
- Paste a title, or several titles one per line, into Input.
- Choose a hyphen or an underscore, a maximum length and whether to lowercase. Tick Latin letters and digits only for plain ASCII slugs.
- Copy the slugs from Output, one per line in the same order.
Frequently asked questions
What does it change?
Accents come off Latin letters (é becomes e, ß becomes ss), the text is lowercased, and every run of spaces and punctuation becomes one separator, with none left at the ends. "Crème Brûlée: 5 Easy Steps!" becomes creme-brulee-5-easy-steps.
What happens to Hindi, Japanese or Arabic titles?
Their letters are kept, because browsers and search engines handle them in addresses. Tick Latin letters and digits only if your system accepts only a to z and 0 to 9; letters from other scripts are then dropped.
How is a long slug shortened?
It is cut at the maximum length, back to the last whole word when that is past half the length, so a slug does not end halfway through a word.
