Palindrome Checker

How to check a palindrome

  1. Type or paste a word, number or sentence. The answer appears as you type, with the text written forward and backward and any letters that differ marked in red.
  2. By default spaces, punctuation, capitals and accents are ignored, as in most famous palindromes. Untick them for a strict, character-by-character check.
  3. Paste a longer text to find the longest palindrome hidden in it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a palindrome?

A word, number or sentence that reads the same backward as forward, such as level, racecar, 12321 or "Was it a car or a cat I saw?".

Does it work in other alphabets?

Yes. It compares whole characters as you see them, so a Hindi or Bengali letter with its vowel sign counts as one: नवजीवन reads न व जी व न both ways. Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Cyrillic work too.

What is the longest palindromic word in English?

Among everyday words, tattarrattat (James Joyce's word for a knock on the door) has 12 letters, and redivider and racecar are common shorter ones.
