Molality and Normality Calculator
How to calculate molality and normality
- Choose Molality or Normality, and type the solute formula (or molar mass) and its mass in grams.
- For molality, type the mass of solvent; for normality, type the solution volume and the equivalents per mole.
- The result appears in mol/kg or N, with the moles of solute, or the molarity and equivalent weight.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between molality and molarity?
Molality is moles of solute per kg of solvent; molarity is moles per liter of solution. Molality does not change with temperature, because masses do not.
What are equivalents per mole?
The number of H⁺ or OH⁻ a molecule gives or takes in the reaction, or the electrons for a redox reaction: 1 for HCl or NaOH, 2 for H2SO4, 3 for H3PO4 when fully neutralized. Normality = molarity × equivalents per mole.
