Frequently asked questions
What are the GST rates in India?
Since 22 September 2025 most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods. Some items are exempt, gold and silver are taxed at 3% and rough diamonds at 0.25%.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide by 1 plus the rate. At 18%, ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, so the GST is ₹180.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
Within one state, half the GST goes to the central government (CGST) and half to the state (SGST). Between states the whole amount is IGST.
