Japanese Consumption Tax Calculator
How to work out Japanese consumption tax
- Choose whether the price you have is before tax or already includes it, then type it in yen.
- Pick 10% for most goods and services, or 8% for food and non-alcoholic drinks bought to take away, and newspapers.
- Choose how the tax is rounded to whole yen. Most shops round down.
Frequently asked questions
What is the consumption tax rate in Japan?
The standard rate is 10%. The reduced rate of 8% applies to food and non-alcoholic drinks (not eating in at a restaurant) and to newspapers delivered twice a week or more.
How do I find the tax inside a tax-included price?
Multiply by 10 and divide by 110 at the 10% rate, or multiply by 8 and divide by 108 at the 8% rate. ¥1,100 includes ¥100 of tax.
Why does rounding matter?
The tax is usually not a whole number of yen. Businesses choose whether to round down, up or to the nearest yen, and most round down.
