Barcode Generator
How to generate a barcode
- Choose EAN-13, UPC-A or EAN-8.
- Type the number. Leave off the last digit and the check digit is worked out for you; type it in full and it is checked.
- Set the bar width and height, then download the barcode as SVG for printing or PNG for the web.
Frequently asked questions
Which barcode do I need?
EAN-13 is the retail barcode used worldwide, UPC-A is the 12-digit version used in the US and Canada, and EAN-8 is the short version for small packages. All three are GS1 numbers.
What is the check digit?
The last digit, calculated from the others, that lets a scanner catch a misread. EAN-13 multiplies the digits alternately by 1 and 3, adds them up and takes what is needed to reach the next multiple of ten.
Can I make up a number?
For a test print or a label on your own shelf, yes. To sell through retailers or online marketplaces you need a number issued to you by GS1, because the first digits identify the company and nobody else may use them.
Why download SVG?
SVG is drawn from lines rather than pixels, so the bars stay crisp at any size and print accurately. A PNG at the wrong size can blur the bars enough to stop a scanner reading them.
How small can I print it?
A standard EAN-13 is 37.29 × 25.93 mm, and the specification allows 80% to 200% of that. Keep the quiet zone, the blank margin either side, and never stretch the barcode in only one direction.
