How to Pick a Random Winner Fairly

Number the entries

Put every valid entry in a list and number it from 1. Remove duplicates and entries that break the rules before the draw, not after, so nobody can say the list was changed to suit the result.

Draw a number

Use the Random Number Generator with a range from 1 to the number of entries, and no repeats if you need several winners. Each entry then has exactly the same chance.

Make it visible

  • For a live audience or a video, the Spin the Wheel shows every name and lands on one.
  • Record your screen during the draw, or do it live, and show the full list first.
  • Decide in advance what happens if the winner does not reply, for example a second draw after 48 hours.

Small decisions

For two options, a Coin Flip is enough. To split a group into fair, random teams, paste the names into the Random Team Generator.

Check the rules

Giveaways and raffles are regulated in many places. Some countries and US states treat a draw that requires a purchase as a lottery, and social networks have their own rules for contests. Read them before you announce one.
