How to Convert Pounds and Ounces to Grams and Kilograms

The exact values

  • 1 pound (lb) = 453.59237 g = 0.4536 kg
  • 1 ounce (oz) = 28.3495 g
  • 1 pound = 16 ounces
  • 1 kilogram = 2.2046 pounds

Worked examples

  • 8 oz × 28.35 = 226.8 g, so half a pound is about 227 g.
  • 150 lb × 0.4536 = 68.0 kg.
  • 7 lb 6 oz (a newborn): 7 × 453.6 + 6 × 28.35 = 3,175 + 170 = 3,345 g.
  • 500 g ÷ 28.35 = 17.6 oz, or 1 lb 1.6 oz.

In your head

To go from kilograms to pounds, double and add 10%: 60 kg × 2 = 120, plus 12 is 132 lb (exactly 132.3). To go back, halve and take off 10%: 200 lb is 100, less 10, so about 90 kg (exactly 90.7).

Two ounces that are not the same

Gold and silver are weighed in troy ounces of 31.1 g, about 10% heavier than the ordinary ounce. A fluid ounce is a volume, not a weight: 1 US fl oz of water weighs about 29.6 g.
